Nine Years at BBS Terefayina: Passion Over Payment
Starting in 2016, Working for Free
One of the most personally revealing and most professionally instructive facts about Allan Cruz Exclusive’s career is that he started at BBS Terefayina in 2016 working for free, choosing to invest his time and his energy in a media institution he believed in without the guarantee of financial compensation because his passion for media was more powerful than the immediate need for a salary.
He has spoken about this period in interviews with the honesty and the retrospective clarity of someone who knows that the decision to stay for free eventually led to being put on the payroll, and that the passion that kept him there without payment was also the quality that made him valuable enough to eventually be paid.
This willingness to work for free because of genuine passion rather than financial calculation is one of the most important decisions of his professional life, and it reflects the character of a man who has always prioritised building something meaningful over the immediate rewards that a less committed approach might have delivered more quickly but with far less depth.

Mama Brighton: The Gomesi, The Lockdown and The Viral Beginning
The origin story of Allan Cruz Exclusive’s comedy acting identity Mama Brighton is one of the most genuinely charming and most authentically accidental creative origin stories in Uganda’s social media history.
During the COVID-19 lockdown, while his little sister was washing at home, Allan picked up their mother’s gomesi with the spontaneous and entirely unplanned intention of showing his sister how their mother behaved at home, imitating the particular mannerisms, the expressions, the authority, and the domestic character of a Ugandan mother in her home environment. He was recording himself during this impromptu performance, the footage was posted, and it went viral immediately.
The audience response was not just laughter but a demand for more: people wanted to see more of this character, more of the gomesi-wearing man imitating the African mother with the accuracy and the comedic instinct of someone who had been observing the original subject closely his entire life.
Mama Brighton was born from a lockdown moment, a mother’s gomesi, a sister’s washing, and a camera that happened to be recording. The character has since become one of Uganda’s most recognised and most widely shared comedy social media personalities, built on the universal relatability of African mother behaviour that every Ugandan who grew up in a family home immediately and deeply recognises.
His Mama Brighton skits capture the specific domestic authority, the particular phrases, the unique disciplinary styles, and the unforgettable everyday moments of the African mother at home with a comedic precision that makes his audience laugh with the particular joy of recognition rather than simply the entertainment of novelty.
